Five strategies for faster word searches

Start with rare letters. J, Q, X and Z appear in very few words, so when you spot one you can usually work out the answer around it immediately.
Hunt endings, not beginnings. Suffixes like -ING, -TION and -ED are visually distinctive clusters, and they anchor the rest of the word for you.
Pick a scanning order and stick to it: rows, then columns, then both diagonals. Random scanning means you cover the same tiles repeatedly and still miss lines.
Use the word list as a shape guide. A nine-letter answer cannot fit in most parts of the grid, so you can rule out large areas at a glance.
Finally, take the last few words slowly. The words that remain are usually backwards or diagonal, which is exactly where tired eyes stop looking.
